Challenge

Design a user-friendly digital platform to connect potential pet owners with the right animal companions from shelters and foster homes. Address challenges such as matching pets with owners based on lifestyle preferences (breed, age, gender, health status), and improve the efficiency of the adoption process. This initiative was inspired by personal difficulties in adopting a pet, which included distant shelter locations, unresponsive contacts, and inaccurate information. The goal is to simplify the adoption experience, making it more accessible and effective for everyone.

Design Process

Goals

  • Finding the right match for the pet and the adopter that fits their lifestyle

  • Find a way to smooth this process by adding or removing steps involved in a face-to-face adoption

  • Provide users with an informative and totally updated application that includes all of the available centres

  • Provide potential adopters with an easy and comfortable way to visit and meet the pets

Research

Understanding pet adoption pathways

I began the project with online research to learn more about the topic and gather more information for my initial thoughts. To understand what problems users are facing and possible areas of improvement, I discussed with some of my friends who were using the application. I began searching the internet (reading blogs about pet adoption) and asking friends for ways to adopt a pet.

There are a few ways to adopt a pet that people uses:

  • Adoption centre

  • Social Media

  • Friend/Relative

  • Shelters

  • Street animals

Survey

In order to analyse the problems users are facing and possible areas of improvement, I conducted an online survey among 24 users of all age group who are adopters or wanting to adopt a pet. I conducted interviews with people who have adopted pets to gather information about adoption. Several of the answers were what I expected, but others changed my perception of how people look for pets.

90%

Respondents overwhelmingly prefer dogs as pets over other animals, highlighting the special bond and loyalty dogs bring, and solidifying their status as favored family members in many households.

Competitive Analysis

Prior to starting the project, I conducted competitive research to identify current design patterns. In order to understand the decision making factors of a user, I studied the user flow of various apps. Here were a few of the applications:

  • ePets

  • Happy Pet

  • Only4pets

  • Pets adoption

Also, for better understanding I installed the application and started using it to understand it in a better way.

Key Insights

  • Some pets were unavailable when people visited centres because they did not keep up with when pets were being adopted

  • Scheduling appointments with centres was the most challenging part of the process since sometimes the phone number on Google wasn’t correct or centre owners didn’t pick up the call

  • Those adopting the animals at the shelter did not know whether the pets were healthy or not

  • It gets difficult for those who are adopting for the first time since the information is incomplete and making it difficult to decide

Target User

  • First-time pet adopters

  • Existing pet owners seeking to adopt a new pet

Wireframes

Prior I developed some wireframes to focus on the placement and visibility of different features. I sketched some options for how I might improve the existing design and resolve the above-mentioned problems.
